Kaspersky's Internet Security suite has won high accolades in
previous years' tests, and nothing we've seen this year has cast a
shadow on its outstanding performance. It defended against 100 per cent
of malware threats, with the vast majority blocked at the browser.
Its performance in our false positive test was also good, with none
of the twitchiness or over-sensitivity that we've seen from previous
versions. Just 10 per cent of our tests (two applications) prompted
warning pop-ups, both these were invariably unobtrusive toaster-style
pop-ups from the notification area which recommended trusting the benign
applications we'd exposed our PC to.
The interface has been updated from last year's darker colours to a
light turquoise, white and green skin, with handy icons on the opening
window providing access to core features, such as the on-demand scanner,
manual signature update, and parental controls. Scrolling right allows
you to view shortcuts to less critical features, including a virtualised
sandbox for running risky or unknown programs, a monitoring tool for
your local network and a virtual keyboard that guarantees malicious
keyboard loggers can’t steal your passwords for services such as online
banking. The main settings menu provides control of core features such
as email virus scanning and spam filtering and your firewall, as well as
less critical features including a web ad banner blocker.
Kaspersky provides highly effective protection against malware, and
no longer requires the level of fine-tuning that previous versions once
did to prevent it from interfering with the day-to-day running of your
computer.
We were also very pleased to find that Kaspersky Internet Security
2012 is one of the most reasonably priced anti-malware products around -
assuming you buy a boxed copy from an online retailer. A version with a
three-user licence costs just £23; since-user licences are available,
but all those we've seen have been more expensive.
